Women with breast cancer who received massage therapy showed a significant increase in both beneficial natural-killer cells and dopamine levels, and a significant decrease in long-term anxiety, as compared to women who received relaxation therapy, according to a recent study.

“Physical Activity Combined with Massage Improves Bone Mineralization in Premature Infants: A Randomized Trial” was conducted by staff at George Washington University Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center, in Washington, D.C.; and the Ain Shams University School of Medicine, in Cairo, Egypt.

Massage Benefits Hospitalized Cancer Patients

Massage therapy decreased pain, symptom distress and anxiety in hospitalized cancer patients, according to a recent study.

Forty-one patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer participated in the study, “Outcomes of Therapeutic Massage for Hospitalized Cancer Patients,” during a 16-month period. Ninety-five percent of the participants were men. Subjects had the following cancer diagnoses: lymph, lung, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, head and neck, leukemia, breast and skin.
