Massage Benefits Hospitalized Cancer Patients

The massage benefits from massage therapy help decreased pain, symptom distress and anxiety in hospitalized cancer patients, according to a recent study.

Forty-one patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer participated in the study for how massage benefits cancer patients, “Outcomes of Therapeutic Massage for Hospitalized Cancer Patients,” during a 16-month period. Ninety-five percent of the participants were men. Subjects had the following cancer diagnoses: lymph, lung, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, head and neck, leukemia, breast and skin.

Physiotherapy Lowers Risk of Lymphedema

Physiotherapy may prevent lymphedema after breast cancer surgery that involves dissection of axillary lymph nodes, researchers say.

Significantly fewer women developed the condition when they were given physiotherapy, compared with women who only received education on preventing the condition, Maria Torres Lacomba, MD, of Alcala de Henares University in Madrid, and colleagues reported online in BMJ.
